Lighting In Art: Ambient Occlusion For 2D Artists
Lighting In Art Week
Ambient occlusion is a rendering technique mostly known in 3D art, but which has been also successfully implemented by 2D artists for quite some time.
In computer graphics, ambient occlusion is sophisticated ray-tracing calculation, which allows you to simulate the soft shadows that happen in cracks, crevices and intersections of surfaces, where the ambient light is darker or even blocked.
It's all about distance ...
The farther the object surface from the light, the more occluded (and darker) the lighting becomes, and it is these soft shadows that help define the separation between objects in the composition, resulti

About Voyage to the Unknown
This was a feature idea started by Mrs-Durden (https://www.deviantart.com/mrs-durden) I was tagged by the lovely nadjasybill (https://www.deviantart.com/nadjasybill) :la:
"I've started a new feature in which I will browse through a category or sub-category I don't necessarily browse frequently, or the ones I browse the least, and collect some of the art I find stands out! The point of this is to challenge myself and discover new art in the process! I'll also be tagging people in each issue to follow suit and do their own, however, don't feel obligated to respond to the tag. I just want everyone to know I'd love to see them do their own spin of this feature
